Historical League: Default rules will be DBA version 3.0, but if both commanders agree the rules set can be changed. Points will be 5 for a win, 3 for a draw, 2 for a close loss and 1 for a loss. The points are like that to encourage more games as someone who plays all their games but loses half their games may qualify ahead of someone who plays and wins just a few games.
It will be two games versus each person, any army can be used and you don't have to stick to the same army, but it has to be chosen before the battle begins.
Also the larger 800mmx800mm board is the default board size.
The top four will go to the semi finals

It was a busy night for the Historical League. We had six battles with lots of plunder taken.
First up the Vikings (Ryan) invaded the Seleucid Empire (Shane). The Vikings formed a line with the General on the hillside. The Seleucids advanced and charged into the Viking line. One Elephant trampled down a blade unit, while the other pushed its blade back. However the Knight General and Cavalry bounced back. Vikings counter attacked and a psiloi unit fled through the pike to what they believed was safety. The Light horse then moved up to protect the Pikes flank. The Seleucid mounted troops then charged again with the General running down a blade unit, but the Cavalry got slaughtered. The Elephant on the hill was then pushed back hitting the Psiloi, scattering them. The Viking blade then came around the flank hitting the Seleucid general. The General was the last to fall trying to hold off the assault. Victory went to the Vikings.
Next up the Vikings (Ryan) invaded the Seleucid Empire (Aaron). Would things change with a new general? The Vikings again set up with the General on a hill and in a line. The Seleucid’s tried to send the Light Horse out on the left flank and then moved the Cavalry from the middle of the line to the right flank. This left a hole in which the Elephants were to fill, but the beasts refused to fill the gap. The Vikings then came charging down, on the Seleucid left, some came out to attack the Light Horse, one blade unit was ran down by the scythed chariot, which then got destroyed by another blade unit. The Light horse then got surrounded and scattered. The Vikings then hit the unformed battleline. The Seleucids held against the initial charge, with the Seleucid General fighting the Viking General in a heroic duel, which left the Viking general dead. The Seleucid elephant then trampled another blade and the Viking army fled. Victory to the Seleucids.
At the same time The Khazars (John) fought the Ottomans (Garry). Victory went to the Ottomans which included the Khazar camp being taken.
Next the Picts (Kev) invaded Ireland (Aaron). The main Pictish battleline was stationary for most of the battle eyeing the Irish hiding in the marsh. The main event was the Irish landing party that made a runner for the Pictish camp. Some of the Pictish pike and a light horse got back and destroyed two of the Irish Auxillia, but the third Auxillia took the camp and held it for the rest of the battle, killing a Pikeman who tried to take it back. Near the end some of the Irish came out of the Marsh to work around the Pictish flank. While one held off the Pictish Light Horse the other hit the side of the Pictish line. Another Auxillia came out of the marsh to protect his flank. The Picts retaliated slaughtering the Auxillia that had hit the side and recoiling the other. The battle then ended as night fell.
At the same time the Vikings (Ryan) fought the Khazars (John). Again the Khazar camp was taken and there army broken, but more of a fight put up as it was a narrow loss to the Vikings.
The final battle was French Ordnance (Shane) invading Italy, defended by the Condotta (Shay). There was a bit of ‘dancing’ in the battle as the knights on the Italian left flank circled around a dune and came into the middle, the two battlelines then lined up, there was an exchange of artillery and bow fire but in the end the lines did nothing. However, on the dune to the right of the Italian line the psiloi from each army fought with the French psiloi victorious. To the right of the dune the French Cavalry clashed with the Italian light horse to no effect. Meanwhile, the French light horse went from behind the cavalry, around the battleline to the other flank, past the Italians to assault the Condotta camp. Unfortunately, they failed in the assault and the game ended in a draw.

Looks like next Wednesday we'll have the Picts vs the Normans Likely to be a fairly fast battle as i reckon most contacts between units will end in one or the other destroyed!

We had a few battles this week.
Earlier in the week the Khazars (John) were invaded by the Ancient Spanish (Seamus). The resulting battle ended in Victory for the Khazars with the Spanish general being among the dead.
The first battle of the evening was between the Normans (Simon) and the Picts (Kevin). The Picts formed up a line and rushed into the Normans, who had held back. The Pictish Pike hit the Norman knights slaughtering them, with the Norman general being felled by the Pictish Light Horse. The battle was over before the Norman dismounted knights could react to hitting the flank, Victory to the Picts.
Meanwhile the Ottomans (Garry) counter attacked against the Khazars (John). Each army formed up in a line and charged at each other. On the Khazar right flank the Khazar hordes clashed with the Ottoman Janissaries and Light foot crushing them and then turning on to the ottoman Siphas slaughtering one. In the middle the Serbian knights held up the Khazar general until the Ottoman general punched through the Khazar line and hit the Khazar general in the flank killing him. On the Khazar left the ottomans won the light horse dual. This left the Ottomans the victors in a close game.
Next the French Ordonnance (Aaron) invaded the Khazars (John). Again both armies lined up against each other. The French half had their mounted on the left and middle and the infantry and artillery on the right. The Khazar mounted was opposite the French and the infantry, war wagon and artillery opposite the French infantry. Both lines initially advanced, then the Khazar mounted troops charged and the infantry swung in at a 45 degree angle to the French. Both sides traded some fire with the French artillery being destroyed by the Ottoman general’s War Wagon. In the mounted clash the Khazar Light Horse surrounded the French light horse scattering it. However, the French Knights crashed through the middle of the Khazar line tearing a huge hole in it. They then swarmed out and crushed the Khazar light horse. The Khazar knights were also surrounded by French knights and Swiss pikemen. After a desperate last stand they too fell. Victory to the French.

So the top 4 are still the same, but just a small change in order. Next Wednesday will be a big clash as Garry has challenged me and we are going to do a Macedonian Successor clash.

We had only one battle this week: The Khazars (John) were invaded by the Picts (Kevin). The Picts formed up in line; Fast Pike to the centre, 2 Psiloi to the left & 2 Light Horse & a Psiloi to the right. The Khazars placed their Horde in the centre with Artillery & their General's War Wagon to their left, with 3 Light horse furthest left. Their right flank was held by 3 Calvary & a Knight. The Terrain was open; with only a small hill affecting battle in the centre on the Pictish left.
The battle began with the 3 Khazar Light horse swinging wide to the Pictish right to be met by the 2 Pictish Light Horse & the Psiloi. This skirmish would ebb back & forth with the Khazar War Wagon General aiding his Light Horse with ranged fire & the Picts sending over a Fast Pike as reinforcements!
In the centre the Khazar mounted left charged to meet the Pictish foot (with the Pictish Fast Pike unable to destroy the Khazar Cavalry in a straight fight - the best result would be them Fleeing!). The Hordes & artillery closed in to to give support fire & threaten the right flank of the narrower, occasionally double ranked Pictish line
Pike! However fist blood went to the Picts: on the right a Khazar Light Horse was trapped & destroyed by Pictish Light Horse & Pike; then a Pictish Light Horse was destroyed by a Khazar Light Horse WHILST TRAPPING THAT SAME Khazar unit in tandem with a Pictish Light Horse!
On the left the Picts used their Psioi & their right most Fast Pike to trap 2 Khazar Cavalry; but only succeed on destroying one - the other heroically fighting it's way clear! this left the lone flanking Pictish Pike unit at the mercy of the oncoming Khazar Knights who rode straight over it & on into the Pictish General...
This would be the decisive turn! The Picts got a good roll for Command PIPs & put them to good use: on the right a Khazar Light Horse was trapped by 2 Pictish Light Horse & overlapped by a Fast Pike; on the left a Khazar Cavalry was trapped by Pictish Pike & Psiloi but escaped; the Khazar next to him also survived the Pike rush; the Khazar Knight however, being a slower, heavier formation was destroyed by the Fast Pike Pictish General! Victory to the Picts!

We had two battles this week. The first up the Italian Condotta (Shane) invade France (French Ordonnance, Aaron). The French had their artillery in a fort on the left flank and Light horse between the fort and a village. The Psiloi were then in the forest with the knights next to them and the Swiss Pike and French ‘pike’ next to them. The Italians had their knights opposite the French, with the artillery covering their right flank and the blade and archers on the left. The Light horse was off ranging on the Italian right.
The Battle started with a French advance. The French Cavalry manage to outflank the Italian left flank and hit the Italian archers in the side. The archers however fought off the Cavalry and the then charged them with the Italian blade hitting them in the side scattering them. The Italians then repaired their line and fired some artillery shots at the French Light Horse and psiloi. Meanwhile the Italian Light Horse got around the French fort, but was stopped from getting the camp by the French light horse. They then spent the rest of the battle fighting each other. The Italians, having wonder why the French hadn’t charge, decided to charge (the Italians had the longer line). With the initial clash the Italians cut a hole in the French line and destroyed the French pike. The French General then counter attacked and routed the Italian knights in front of him, but it was too late as the Swiss Pike was surrounded and wiped out. Victory to the Italians.
The second battle was between the Picts (Kev) and Italian Condotta (Shane). The Italians again lined up to take on the Pictish pike. They had a wood to the right of their line with the knights in the middle and the pike and archers to the left and Light Horse and artillery to the right. The Picts had a wood on the left of their pike with the Light Horse going around this to pick off the Italian light horse and artillery. There they would stay for the rest of the battle. The Italian knights then did a gallant charge into the Pictish pike where they lost half their number. Victory to the Picts.

Wednesday Night Historicals Historical Newsletter 10
Only one DBA battle fought this week: The Free Company (Chris) invaded the Picts (Kev) The terrain consisted of 2 woods forming an inverted L in the centre of map with a north/south steep hill to east of that. There were also 2 ploughed areas in the NW & SW corners of the battlefield.
The Picts deployed with a Pike block (including their General) in centre with the north.south stretch of Wood just to their west, with a Psiloi tagged onto the eastern end of the line; 2 Psiloi to east & their 2 Light Horse to rear & west of the main line.
The Free Company deployed their 6 Knights (including their General) to west of central north/south stretch of Wood; Cavalry on far west; 2 Archers behind the central east/west Wood & 2 more Archers behind the Steep Hill just inside the Cavalry's position.
The Picts began poorly (rolling only 1 PIP - which also caused a downpour turning the Ploughed Land into muddy Rough Going) the Pictish Pike block advanced alone to plug the gap between the 2 Woods in the centre-west.
The Free Company leapt into action (6 PIPS!) - their Archers claim the central Wood & Hill; the Cavalry advance around the Hill; & 3 easternmost Knights dismount as Blades!
The Picts (still hard of hearing in the rain) attack the Archers in Wood with a Psiloi & 2 Pike units. Although the initial assault fails & after receiving some nasty Bow fire they succeed in surrounding & killing both Archers & a Blade who tries to come to their aid...
The Free Company respond by advancing their Knight General & 2 Blade through gap between the woods towards the Pictish Pike block & send the 2 eastern Pictish Psiloi scampering towards the Woodland by swinging their Cavalry towards them & also advance their remaining 2 Knight down the west flank around the Pictish main battle line!
This Pictish main force is further depleted (2 having gone into the wood & now pinning a Blade just outside said wood in their Threat Zone) by another Pike having to peel off to pin the Free Company Cavalry & attempt to save the Psiloi. This leaves only the General & 3 Pike (in double ranks) to face the Free Company General & Blade compatriot!
The Free Company Cavalry Push Back the lone Pike unit & the Knight General kills the Pictish Pike ahead of him & continues on into the rear rank, while the Blade Pushes Back the Pictish Pike General.
Soon to be facing enemies on 3 sides the PIictish General & one of the now centrally placed Psiloi trap & kill the opposing Blade unit; while the Pike to their left manages to Push Back the Free Company General (nearly killing him! he survived by 1 point!) That was 4 kills to 1: Victory Picts!

DBA newsletter There was one battle this week. Aaron (Later Ottoman) fought Shane (Later Crusader). The Crusaders lined up with the spearmen in the middle and knights on the flanks. On the right flank were crossbowmen and on the left the Light Horse. The Ottomans set up with their infantry and artillery in the middle and most of the Cavalry and Light Horse on the left flank and a screening force of Light Horse on the right. The Crusaders advanced initially, but then the Ottoman Light Horse moved around the left flank and caught the crossbowmen. The Crossbowmen however had the upper hand scattering the majority of the Light Horse with the rest retreating. However the main crusader line had kept advancing. The Crusader Light Horse advanced a bit to far and the Ottoman screening force hit them and destroyed it. The right flank of the main crusader battle line was also vulnerable, with the anchor being the Knight General. The Light horse that had retreat now charged the general in the side, while the Ottoman general charged into the front with more Cavalry and psiloi assaulting the rest of the line. The Ottoman general then cut down the Crusader commander and the rest of the line was pushed back. The Crusaders rallied and charged back in to regain the true cross. The Spearmen surrounded the psiloi on the flank wiping it out while the knights on the left of the main battle line charged down the Ottoman light horse on that side. Victory to the Crusaders.

Historical League Newsletter. First note is we are having our Christmas party/AGM on 2nd of December. We will meet at the shop and at some time wander down to the Hong Kong. Also I have sent the league spreadsheet to Kev so that he can take over recording the league as I will be away from 08/12 until January. Any results from now on should be sent to him. This week there were three battles fought in the DBA League. First up the Normans (Simon) took on the Norse Irish (Shay). The Normans, true to style, lined up the knights and advanced. The Irish had their Ostman blade out front and tried to get around the side with the Auxilia, but the attack failed and the Normans cut their way through for victory. Next the Seleucids (Aaron) attacked Antigonus (Asiatic successor army, Garry). The two lines advanced and the first clash was between the Seleucid Light Horse and an Antigonian Psiloi, which held and allowed the Antigonian light horse to hit the Seleucid in the side scattering it. The Seleucid general then charged in routing the Light Horse and then destroying the Psiloi. Meanwhile Antigonus pushed into the Seleucid pike block cutting down the front rank. As this was happening, the Seleucid elephants caught Antigonus’s cavalry in the front and side stomping it into the ground. Some of the elephants then followed up into Antigonus’s companions and crushed them. Victory to the Seleucids. The last battle was the Seleucids (Aaron) following up on their victory and attacking Demetrius (Asiatic successor army, Garry). Here Demetrius held back. The Seleucids had some command problems which allowed Demetrius to nearly outflank the Seleucids, but they managed to stablise the flank, but this allowed Demetrius’s pike block, supported by Elephants to hit the Seleucid pike block. Demetrius’s Light horse scattered the psiloi supporting the Seleucid pike on one side, but the other psiloi held off the advancing Auxilia. The Pike pushed each other and managed to destroy the Seleucid scythed chariot, but the Seleucid cavalry filled the gap. On the other flank, the Seleucid mounted troops and elephants got organised. One Elephant charged and scattered Demetrius’s Light horse and then held that flank of the pike block from Demetrius’s Elephant. The other elephant with the Seleucid General and light horse, braving artillery fire, caught Demetrius’s cavalry the destroyed it, next the elephant wrecked the artillery. By this time Demetrius’s auxilia had chased off the psiloi and with Demetrius himself appearing threaten to encircle the Seleucid pike block. In a last gasp attempt the Seleucid light horse charge into Demetrius’s elephant. The Javelins being too much for the elephants they broke as a unit and ran. With them gone Demetrius’s army lost heart and either ran or surrendered. Victory to the Seleucids. Historical Newsletter 2 DBA battles fought this week:
The DBA battles were fought between the Free Company (Chris) & the Ottoman Turks (Garry). The first battle went to the Turks with a 4-2 victory as they held off the Free Company Knights & got their own kills in. Victory Ottomans!
The second battle was a bloody draw! The Turks got their 4th kill in, but it was realised that one lone combat was still left: the Free Company had a chance to seize back a Draw & duely did as their unit rolled over the isolated Turkish Artillery: 4-4 Draw!

Historical Newsletter 1 DBA battle fought this week:
The Picts (Kev) were invaded by the Norse Irish (Aaron). The battlefield had 2 Ploughed areas in the SW encroaching on the centre line; a Gentle Hill in the NE corner & a second Gentle Hill in the centre just north of the centre line
The Picts deployed in line just off-centre to the West with a x3 double ranked Fast Pike block in the centre (including their General) wit a lone Fast Pike on their left; a Psiloi & a Light Horse on their far left; their right was held by x2 Psiloi & a Light Horse
The Norse Irish deployed opposite with their x3 Solid Blade in the centre; their Solid Auxilia on either end of this block (the right-hand one of which was their General) & with x3 Fast Auxilia on either end of the line. Their Cavalry set up to the rear of the right of the line.
Both sides advanced, with the NI Cavalry swinging out to the end of the right of their line. The Picts reckoned they were to be enveloped so charged in with their Pike centre supported by the lone Pike & a Psiloi to anchor this block's flanks while the other Psiloi & LH advanced staggered in a "Chevron" style to try & delay being outflanked...
The battle in the centre was hotly contested with the double-ranked Pike having the slight edge over the Blade, but with the NI Blade being Solid it meant any Drawn Combat counted as a Push Back against the Fast Picts, & all the time with the NI havin 3 extra Bases in width to their battleline that the Picts sacrificed to double rank their centre.
The decisive moment came when (with the NI suffering a repeated repeated lack of order PIPS) the Picts got a chance to overwhelm an opponent: with the Pike blocks on either side of him being held back by the NI Blade the Pictish General forged ahead, repeated forcing back his opponent. Bravely/Foolishy his rear rank support dropped back to help overlap a NI Blade unit on both sides (leaving his General isolated) & this edge allowed the Pictish Pike to destroy the Blade; at the same time a very fortuitous roll (6 versus 1) allowed another Pictish Pike block to destroy a NI Blade! This left a big hole in the centre of the NI line & their General exposed also.
In the next turn the NI dropped their General back to relative safety & counter attacked with everything on the wings - but to no avail; they destroyed nothing or else forced Pictish units to Flee! from potential traps rather than just recoil...
The Picts then surrounded an isolated NI Auxilia on the right with 3 Units & killed him; then overran an Auxilia on the left in a straight up fight with a Psilio. Victory Picts! (with alot of very friendly dice...)
Current Standings: DBA Points: Aaron: 41 Kevin: 38 Garry: 26 John: 24 Ryan: 23 Chris: 21 Shane: 15 Simon: 12 Seamus & Shay: 6 Michael: 5 Gareth: 4 Mark: 3 Anthony & David: 2
